Better Talent was founded by Steve Trover, a decades-long veteran of the vacation rental industry, who has been involved in all aspects of the industry, including management, sales, design, construction and software development. Having scaled from zero to 400 properties across four destinations, his company became the market leader in the #1 family destination on the planet: Central Florida.

As the former president of the Vacation Rental Management Association, Steve led the association’s push into the European Union. Steve also launched the first R&D process for designing and building purpose-built vacation homes, a process now used routinely in the industry.

With this depth and breadth of experience, Steve learned that the biggest struggle companies in the vacation rental space face is hiring and retaining talent, which is also usually the biggest expense.

When Steve stepped out of operations and started a consulting company, he immediately began leveraging personality assessments with his clients, which was one of his secrets for success in his own companies. However, he quickly realized the fast-growing companies he served weren’t able to commit the time to do it “right,” and the solution he was offering was still not solving his customers’ people problems. They didn’t have the time, the staff or the knowledge to do it well and concentrate on their core focus and daily operations.

He began offering retained search, personally setting job targets and finding the right behavioral fit, but soon realized the model was out of reach for many small businesses, not to mention it was also too long of a process with too much risk for those who could afford it. His passion and loyalty to his peers left him dissatisfied that there would still be companies left behind.

Innovating Talent Acquisition

Continuing his role as an innovator in the industry, Steve modified how his consultancy assisted with hiring and quickly invented the most efficient and cost-effective way to help the vacation rental industry — starting with a per-hire model for key, full-time roles.

That’s when he walked away from the consultant model and Better Talent was born.

Yet, the reality is that hiring one leader at a time still did not truly solve the people problem for as many companies as possible whose hiring needs extended beyond leadership positions.
